OPAP...The Mask Free Alternative!
The
OPAP oral mask is a custom fabricated intra-oral device. It positions
the lower jaw forward to maximize the forward movement of the tongue and
soft tissues of the back of the throat. In addition, the device has a
patented chamber which allows air flow and pressure to be delivered into
the back of the throat and thereby “splint“ the soft tissues
of the upper airway and prevent their collapse during sleep. It is custom
fitted by a dentist specializing in dental appliances for sleep disorders
and it is only available by the prescription request of a physician.
The OPAP oral mask method of treatment is similar to nasal mask delivery of air pressure with CPAP or Bilevel systems. The device is simply connected to the end of the hose coming from the CPAP or Bilevel, and the pressure is adjusted by order of a sleep physician in the same way as through the nose. On most occasions there appears to be less pressures required for the OPAP oral delivery than are needed in nasal mask delivery of air pressure. Check with your physician for the prescribed pressure setting for you.
The OPAP oral mask does not require head gear to hold it in place. It is inserted into the mouth and held in place by the upper and lower teeth. Partials and bridges can be accommodated during the custom fitting of the appliance. As it is not on the face, the sinuses are less affected, moustaches are not a problem and seals around the nose by a mask are not required.
